How To Choose Investment Casting Parts

Leave a message

When choosing investment casting parts, you need to consider the structural characteristics, performance requirements, application requirements, production process type, production batch and cost of the parts. You can choose investment casting, sand casting, CNC precision machining and other processes. The following is an analysis from four key dimensions: material applicability, production batch, cost control, and performance requirements, and provides specific selection suggestions:

Material applicability

Investment casting (lost wax casting) is suitable for the production of parts with complex shapes, high precision, and difficult-to-cut materials, especially for materials such as high-temperature alloys, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys.

Another advantage of choosing investment casting to manufacture parts is that you are not limited by the available base metals or metal alloys. Ceramic molds can adapt to the melting temperatures and melting characteristics of a variety of metals. If the part needs to be made of copper, steel, titanium or special alloys, the investment casting process is usually competent for the production process. This process is suitable for ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Production batch

Investment casting involves making a wax pattern of the part and building a ceramic shell around the wax pattern to make the mold. The wax is then melted from the mold and the molten metal is poured into the mold to make the part. Investment casting is repeatable because the process is designed to produce a certain number of parts continuously. Investment casting is an ideal production run regardless of the output. Although it can be used to make prototypes, if you only want to make a part at a time, there are other cost-effective options.

Performance requirements

1. Mechanical properties

Strength and toughness: meet the requirements by adjusting the alloy composition (such as increasing the Si content in aluminum alloys to improve strength) and controlling the cooling rate (such as using directional solidification processes to improve the performance of high-temperature alloys).
Fatigue performance: avoid internal defects in castings (such as pores and shrinkage), and important parts need to undergo X-ray flaw detection and fluorescence detection.

2. Surface quality

Precision instrument parts (such as aviation instrument housings) require a surface roughness of Ra≤3.2μm, which can be achieved by refining the coating layer (using alumina micropowder) and optimizing the dewaxing process.
Corrosion-resistant scenarios (such as marine engineering parts) require surface plating (such as nickel-phosphorus plating, chrome plating) to improve protection performance.

3. Dimensional accuracy

General tolerance levels can reach CT4~CT6 (GB/T 6414-2020). Precision parts (such as aircraft engine fuel nozzles) need to control the tolerance within ±0.05mm, which needs to be achieved through mold accuracy control and wax mold shrinkage compensation.

Cost control

When choosing casting and processing technology, cost is the main factor. If you want to produce a large number of high-precision parts and do not need a large number of molds, then investment casting is a good choice. Because investment casting is a net shape, it can achieve precise dimensions and strict tolerances. Since only the right amount of metal is poured into the mold, you can also save material and processing costs.
